The Barn Theatre

History of The BarnTheatre

The BarnTheatre started as a row of straw bales in a draughty hay barn. Animals were bought in for the children to see and stroke. After a few months we had four rows of bales and the people at the back were unable to see what was going on at the front! We had the idea of tiering the rows, which was an instant success. In fact it became so successful that people were saying that they were unable to hear the commentary at the back, so we introduced radio microphones. This worked well until the neighbours complained that they could hear the commentary going on, so we had the idea of boxing the area in, to keep the sound within the demonstration area.

For the first time, this began to take on the look of a proper little theatre and the idea was built upon by adding lights and proper chairs to replace the straw bales.

Panto time with Tim and Trina Rollings

Eventually we decided to make a substantial investment and have the theatre completely rebuilt, doubling the seating capacity and using mostly our own labour and also professional companies for the lighting and seating. The result is stunning.

Lucky for us we have an in-house artist – Trina Rollings does all of our set painting and was also the talented artist who painted the jolly jumbos wall design!
